Sitting in at Liz Fixen’s monthly jam session at Terra Cafe in Baltimore. Held on the fourth Sunday of every month, this session always attracts great players from all over.
Members of the Prince George’s Community College jazz faculty performed for Video Game Music Live in April of 2023, an event at PGCC featuring music from video games performed by a variety of ensembles. The group included Benny Russell (saxophone), Reginald Cyntje (trombone), Greg Small (piano), Phil Ravita (bass), and Keith Umbach (drums).

In April of 2023, Greg returned to Ashland Presbyterian Church to play for Easter Sunday with organist Sheila Slade-Lee, the Ashland Chancel Choir, and the Ashland Praise band.

In March of 2023, Greg began teaching piano and trumpet full-time at Music and Arts through their Ellicott City, Laurel, and Timonium locations.

In March of 2021, Scott Beard unexpectedly passed away. Dr. Beard was an early supporter of Greg’s piano playing, always happy to talk shop, even letting him know the worst-kept secret in the music department, that his office was kept unlocked at night for his piano students to be able to practice on either one of two impeccably maintained grands. Greg was thrilled that Dr. Beard agreed to accompany his senior recital back in 2001 and learned so much playing with him. Rest in peace to one of the greats.
In early February of 2021, Greg joined members of the Baltimore Jazz Alliance to perform a live stream children’s concert sponsored by the Baltimore County Public Library in celebration of Black History Month. The performance featured Rhonda Robinson (vocals, flute), Greg Thompkins (saxophone), Greg Small (piano), Phil Ravita (bass), and Russell Hayward (drums).
To kick off 2021, Greg performed with the Grasso-Ravita Jazz Ensemble in a concert celebrating the release of Jagged Spaces, the group’s debut recording. Consisting of all original music, the recording has received positive reviews from the Baltimore Jazz Alliance, Contemporary Fusion Reviews, the Midwest Record, and others. The unusual times of isolation provided Greg the opportunity to tackle the challenge of piano tuning in the spring and summer of 2020.
During the coronavirus pandemic, in the spring of 2020, Greg began teaching remotely out of his home, connecting with piano and trumpet students via the Zoom app.

Rest in Peace, Chris Vadala. In 2006, Chris accepted Greg into the jazz studies graduate program at the University of Maryland, spearheading an enormously productive phase of his development. Getting to share the stage with Chris several times in the years following graduation was a highlight for Greg, and he will be forever grateful for being taken under the wing of this Grammy-winning legend.

While in graduate school at the University of Maryland, Greg performed in the 5:30 band, the program’s top jazz ensemble, directed by Chris Vadala. The lineup for this performance at the 2008 Calvin Jones Big Band Jazz Festival featured Cam Collins, Sarah Hughes, Brad Linde, Tim Powell, Matt Taylor, and Michael Feagans (saxophones); Brent Madsen, Kevin Horan, Kai Kataldo, and Justin Bland (trumpets); Chris Wolf, Jennifer Krupa, Juna Winston, and Zac Hollister (trombones), Katherine Mann and Glen Shirley (guitars); Leo Lucini (bass); and Nucleo Vega (drums).
Greg performed the Haydn Trumpet Concerto with the Shepherd University Wind Ensemble (directed by Dr. Mark McCoy), on their 2001 concert tour of Ireland.
In 2000, Greg served as principal trumpet with the National Wind Ensemble, a nationally auditioned collegiate workshop that culminated with a Carnegie Hall Performance. Getting to see the New York Philharmonic with his parents was an added bonus.
